Should I Measure Both Feet?

People who enjoy walking and wear shoes that fit properly may reap the full benefits of this type of exercise. Research has indicated the importance of frequently measuring the feet, as this may help to determine the correct shoe size. The size and structure of the feet can change as the aging process occurs, which is why it is helpful to measure both feet. Many patients find it useful to trace their foot on a piece of paper, as this can make it easier to notice flat feet or high arches. Before purchasing shoes, it is important to make sure there is adequate room for the toes to move freely in. For additional tips on how to purchase shoes that fit properly, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from McKinney Podiatric Associates, PA. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Where Are the Sesamoid Bones Located?

The pain and discomfort that is often experienced with the medical condition sesamoiditis is generally felt under the big toe. Two sesamoid bones are found inside the tendons of the big toe, and can become injured if shoes that are worn do not fit correctly. These types of shoes can include high heels, which typically have inadequate room for the toes to move freely in. A common symptom that many patients experience with this condition can consist of a dull pain that can become stronger as walking and running activities are pursued. It is beneficial to perform exercises that can strengthen the feet, as this may help the foot to generally feel better. If you have pain on the bottom of your foot near the big toe, it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact one of our podiatrists of McKinney Podiatric Associates, PA. Our doctors will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Pasadena, Baytown, League City, Houston, and Pearland,TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Babies and Flat Feet

Research has indicated that the majority of infants are born with flat feet, and the arch will generally be fully formed by approximately ten years of age. There is a small percentage of children where this does not occur, and surgery can be an option that may help to form the arch. There are common symptoms that are typically associated with flat feet. These can consist of pain and discomfort on the inside of the ankle, the arches of your foot, the calf, and the outside of your foot. Existing medical conditions may prevent an arch from developing. These conditions can often include specific types of arthritis, cerebral palsy, or obesity. If you believe you are afflicted with flat feet, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can offer you correct treatment options.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from McKinney Podiatric Associates, PA. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Pasadena, Baytown, League City, Houston, and Pearland,TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Do I Have Arthritis in My Feet?

There are several types of arthritis that can affect the feet. Osteoarthritis can lead to the formation of a bunion. This is often recognized by the appearance of a bony protrusion which develops on the side of the big toe. It can be caused by weakened cartilage on the bottom of the big toe. It is often helpful to avoid wearing high heels, and to choose shoes that have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Rheumatoid arthritis typically affects the bottom of the foot, and is typically caused by joints that have become inflamed. Additionally, patients who have experienced gout are often aware of the intense pain and discomfort this type of arthritis can cause. Gout may occur from eating foods that have elevated purine levels, which is why it may help to make any necessary changes to your eating habits. If you are afflicted with arthritis in the feet, it is strongly advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from McKinney Podiatric Associates, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from McKinney Podiatric Associates, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Where Is the Plantar Fascia?

The portion of tissue that is found on the bottom of the foot is called the plantar fascia. It connects the heel to the toes, and helps to provide flexibility to the foot while walking and running. When this band of tissue becomes inflamed as a result of an injury or from overuse, the condition plantar fasciitis may develop. The symptoms that are generally associated with this condition can include severe pain and discomfort in the heel and surrounding area, and this pain may be worse in the morning after arising. Some patients find mild relief when the affected foot is rolled on a cold bottle, as this may be helpful in relaxing the affected muscles. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists from McKinney Podiatric Associates, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.
